Hanover
The Spanish town of Santa Lucea or Lucea is the capital of this parish. Sight see and enjoy the Georgian charm of the quaint town that lies on the magnificent bay. Gentle green slopes dotted with cattle, houses and the ruins of windmills and sugar works give way to breathtaking views of the sea. The Cabaritta River flows from the rainforest area of Dolphin Head Mountain and the Great River forms the border between Hanover and two neighboring parishes, St. James and St. Elizabeth. Under the English, Hanover’s many relatively small estates were profitable because of the cost-effective wind and water –driven mills. After Emancipation, African indentured workers – Anagos – came to work on the estates, bringing their rich old Yoruba culture. View the ruins at Kenilworth (now the HEART Academy) considered the best example of old industrial architectures in the island includes a mill, boiling house and distillery. Tour the Tyrall Estate at Tyrall Golf and Country and see their working water wheel, then enjoy a game of golf on this world-class golf course. Move to the rhythms of Ettu Play, a celebratory ritual of the Anagos.
