Manchester
Manchester is the sixth largest parish in Jamaica. It is located in the west centre of the Island, between the parishes of Clarendon and St. Elizabeth. The parish was created in 1814; and was named after the 5th Duke of Manchester, the longest serving English Governor in Jamaica (1808 - 1827). Manchester is noted for its lush green vegitation and cool climate. This has made it the preferred location for Returning Residents, particularly, those from the United Kingdom. Manchester's prosperity has its foundation in the bauxite mining industry. The major bauxite mining comanies, such as Alcan and Kaiser, established mining plants in the parish. The parish also grows much of Jamaica's "irish potato", and other ground provisions, along with citrus and the rearing of cattle. OVERVIEW OF PARISH
