Tour Jamaica
St James
Rich in history and beauty, St. James is bound to the north by picture-perfect sandy-white beaches and aqua waters. The cool, green mountains to the south feature charming towns, village and old estates. Spanish colonists boiled lard from wild hogs earning the place the name Bahia de Manteca (Bay of Lard) eventually called Montego Bay. The British expanded sugar cane cultivation and slave labour. The enslaved grew restive and participated in a massive rebellion in 1831, brilliantly organized throughout St. James by Baptist deacon Sam “Daddy” Sharpe. This effectively forced the passage of Emancipation legislation in 1834 and earned Sam Sharpe a National hero status. By the late 1800’s, through the industry of peasant farmers, banana became the main crop and banana boats returned with visitors who flocked Montego Bay’s beaches, especially Doctor’s Cave. Montego Bay would become Jamaica’s tourism capital and home to the island’s second international airport. View the historic Burchell Baptist Church – Sam Sharpe’s Church.
