Tour Jamaica
St Mary
Lying on the north-eastern side of the island is the lush, green parish with impo-sing montains, winding rivers and virtually unspoiled coastlines. First called “puerta Santa Maria” or “Port Maria”, the area was home to a large population of Tainos. St Mary became one of the most important plantation regions growing mainly sugarcane and later banana and coconuts. St. Mary also saw the infamous 1760 revolt, which was led by an enslaved African called Tacky from the Frontier Estate. It was quelled by the Militia and regular troops aided by the Scott’s Hall Maroons. Tack’s Memorial now stands in the Claude Stuart Park at Port Maria. View the monument at Rio Nuevo that marks the site of the final battle between the Spanish and the British for Jamaica. Arrange to see a Dinki Minni a Nine Night funerary celebration peculiar to St. Mary that reportedly started at Tacky’s death. Relax at Firefly – home of Noel Coward, playwright and international celebrity in the 1950s. Visit and enjoy Golden eye, once home to Ian Fleming – the creator of the famous James Bond series. Do visit Strawberry Fields. Go river fishing especially for crayfish, called “janga”, and just enjoy the scenery.
