Westmoreland
Westmoreland is the eight largest parish in Jamaica. It is located on the south side of the Island, between the parishes of Hanover, St. James and St. Elizabeth. Westmoreland was created in 1703 and was so named because it was situated in the most westerly point of the Island. The parish is the famous tourist destination of Negril, with is with its beautiful white sand beaches.
Historically, the prosperity of the parish was based on agriculture, particularly, sugar cane. Sugar was the chief industry, with a large sugar factory at Frome. However, since the 1950s, tourism has developed to be the the major industry in the parish. This parish is where you will find the world famous seven-mile stretch of white sand beach at Negril. Negril is one of the major tourism centres in Jamaica and many of the Jamaica's finest hotels are located in this area. Hotels such as Sandals Negril and Beaches Negril.
